Combating Organized Crime through International Cooperation

Organized crime has become one of the most pressing transnational challenges. From drug trafficking and money laundering, cybercrime to human smuggling, its effects reach far beyond national borders. The criminal network behind this is well-organized and operates effectively and profitably across oceans. Europe and Latin America are closely linked in this regard: The criminal structures take advantage of weak institutions on the transnational level, undermine the rule of law, and have generally become a threat for the enforcement of human rights and democratic resilience. To counter this dangerous trend, Argentina and Italy have signed an agreement in 2025 which seeks to combat international drug syndicates and organized crime groups operating on a transnational level. Both countries share real-time data and intelligence between law enforcement agencies and try to identify effective technics against organized crime and vulnerabilities on all sides.

This conference, organized by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), brings together decisionmakers, officials, experts from Argentina, Italy and Germany. It seeks to discuss successful means of transnational cooperation to fight organized crime as well as the greatest challenges to tackle the problem at its root.
