Tourism for Global Recovery?

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the tourism industry hard with estimates that 100 million jobs and US$2.7 trillion in revenue could be lost globally. For South Asia, 48 million jobs are at risk, many held by women and vulnerable communities working in Micro, Small and Medium enterprises (MSMEs) and the informal sector, which makes up around 80 percent of the total industry. Many may not survive the crisis without substantial support. Governments are responding with emergency programs to help enterprises stay afloat and save jobs. As the region moves from crisis to recovery planning, governments have an opportunity to think strategically about the future of their tourism sectors, collaborate with private sector and implement policies that will improve the industry.

What are the priorities for this recovery process? What role do European tourism companies and tourists play? Those are some of the questions we want to discuss with the invited experts.

With this online discussion, which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Friedrich Naumann Foundation contributes to making the UN´s Agenda 2030 - especially regarding human rights and rule of law - more known.
