Human Rights in Spotlight - Ending Female Genital Mutilation
“This year, 4.3 million girls are at risk of female genital mutilation, according to the latest UNFPA estimates. This number is projected to reach 4.6 million by 2030, as conflict, climate change, rising poverty and inequality continue to hinder efforts to transform gender and social norms that underpin this harmful practice and disrupt programmes that help protect girls”. (Joint Statement by UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem and UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell on the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation).
In cooperation with the iac Berlin, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom will approach this topic in the form of an exclusive book presentation and subsequent discussion with Nice Leng'ete, author of the book "The Girls in the Wild Fig Tree". In this powerful memoir, Nice shares her journey from growing up in a Maasai village in Kenya to becoming a leader in the fight to end female genital mutilation. Hear Nice's inspiring story firsthand and learn about her fight to save girls throughout Africa and the world. Don't miss this opportunity to meet the author and be inspired by her incredible journey.
Nice Leng'ete is part of a delegation of seven high-ranking human rights activists from sub-Saharan Africa who are conducting their visiting programme tour "Face Me – Interface and unpacking experi-ences with frontline Human Rights Defenders in Africa".
All seven human rights activists will be present in Berlin on May 8. We invite you to engage in conversation with all of them and to discuss a wide array of human rights issues.
